BEECO, Holeta, Ethiopia
The BEECO Agro farm is a 10 ha greenhouse operation situated on a wonderfull location in Holeta, just 40km from Addis Ababa airport. The place was bought as an abandoned rose farm but was not able to turn it around and become successfull. Quadraat Global has been asked to help out and we have taken over the management in the attempt to make this farm fruitfull again. This farm is on a rich clay soil, has access to great water quality and is located at 2500 meter above sea-level, which makes the farm best suitable for highland crops which require moderate day temperatures and cool nights.
The aim for this farm is not only to be profitable, but also to lead by example in;
– growing vegetables for consumption rather than flowers for decoration
– offering a work space where there is room for personal development and growth
– providing a stable income to loyal and committed employees and their families
– being a good employer by producing healthy crops and safe working conditions
– generating Forex through exports, which is necessary for Ethiopia to import essential goods
– being a financial support to Stem Power, Ethiopia’s leading support in scientific education in schools
– becoming a training centre where children learn about advanced methods of vegetable production
Like everybody else, horticulture producers are battling the shortage and price hike of farm inputs. Despite this, we have setup a production planning where majority of produce is exported, but also the local markets are being supplied. The team has outstanding know-how on horticulture. By knowledge exchange we see the commitment growing which has an immediate impact in the performance of the farm. This diverse team is running the show and doing trials to identify more crops which suit the highland growing conditions, such as fresh herbs. We have identified customers in North West Europe and are working hard to comply with all the industry standards.
